Sulfur is unlike other elements because it can act as either an oxidant of metals or a reducer of other elements like oxygen and fluorine.
Io, a moon of Jupiter, is covered in Sulfur by Sulfur volcanoes.
Sulfur was used throughout recorded history for various purposes. It was often referred to as Brimstone.
Sulfur is often used in plant fumigants, fruit preservatives, and plant fertilizers.

The Sulfur compound sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is a critical material for industrial processes.  Sulfuric acid is so important that  its production and consumption is an indicator of a nation's industrial development.
Sulfur is an essential element for all life.  It is used in many chemical pathways as BOTH oxidant or reducing agent.
